Chapter Twenty

Bridget hated the fact that she spent the rest of the afternoon either crying or too angry

to rationalize what had happened. It never occurred to her that she could lose her new

friends over something as simple as her need to avoid confrontation. What kind of friends

were they if that could happen? She called her therapist, but couldn't get an appointment

until later in the week. She felt lonely and emotionally out of control.

"Great," she mumbled as she looked in the mirror at her puffy eyes and glowing red nose.

There was no way she could ever hide the fact that she was upset. Her face always gave her

away like a blinking neon sign advertising her distress.

She took a shower and stayed under the hot spray until the numbness she felt inside slowly

began to wash away. After her shower, Bridget put on more makeup than usual in hopes of

hiding her red nose.

"No more crying," she told herself as she looked in the mirror.

"So what if the three of them are off on a new adventure without you?"

Wrong thing to say, she thought as another tear rolled down her cheek. Get a grip, she

reminded herself. You have to be in front of thirty students in over an hour.

Bridget woke up late the next morning and felt groggy from too much sleep. The covers on

the bed were as scrambled as her hair. It had been a fitful night of tossing, turning and wild

dreams of abandonment and confusion. She was too tired to do anything, and too depressed

to even want to pull herself out of this funk she now found herself in. A shower sounded like

a good idea and would hopefully make her feel better. She had to teach a five o'clock class

that afternoon and still had some papers to grade. She wasn't in a mental place where she

could concentrate well enough to do her students justice at the moment, but she anticipated

being there after a strong cup of coffee.

After her shower, the phone rang. Bridget glanced at the caller ID in hopes of seeing

Gwen's phone number there, but it was her mother instead.

"Bridget, dear," Mrs. McBee said, "your father and I are going to Los Patios today for lunch and we're wondering if you'd like to meet us there."

"Actually, I haven't been up long and I'm just about to have my first cup of coffee."

"It's almost ten! You're just now getting up?"

"Long night," Bridget said, in no mood to try and explain herself to her mother.

"We'd love to see you for lunch," Mrs. McBee said. "Let us know if you change your mind."

Maybe getting out would do you some good, Bridget thought, but then just as quickly she

decided against it. Staying at home sulking all day in her jammies sounded like a better idea

to her.

"Maybe another time," Bridget said, "but thanks for asking."

"Then we'll see you later this week."

Once Bridget got off the phone with her mother, she went to fix another cup of coffee. A

few minutes later Jane called.

"Lupita and I saw Kate or Ola What's-Her-Name yesterday afternoon," Jane said excitedly.
